Ha. I call my younger BIL (also younger than my J-wife) by the diminutive of his first name the whole family uses, which ends with the 'kun' suffix, and he calls me by my first name proper with the 'san' suffix. Given all the age/cultural factors there's no surprise there. In your case... I've got nothing you haven't considered.
Thus far we generally communicate through my wife, and now the children. He's a decent enough guy, but not the most outgoing or articulate at the best of times, so this set up appears to be working for us.
